Tips for the best green smoothie bowl
- Use frozen fruit for a thick, spoonable bowl. With fresh fruit you get a drinkable smoothie instead.
- Add liquid a splash at a time. Too much and it won't hold the toppings.
- Blend the kefir and spinach first, then add the frozen fruit. It's easier on the blender and smoother.
- Arrange the toppings in rows for that smoothie-bowl look.
Variations
- Vegan: use a plant-based kefir or soy yogurt with a splash of soy milk.
- Swap the spinach for kale (remove the stems) or a handful of frozen peas for extra protein.
- More protein: add a spoon of hemp seeds or a scoop of plant protein powder.
- Top with granola, sliced banana or pumpkin seeds for more crunch.
Storing
Eat straight away; smoothie bowls melt and separate. To prep ahead, freeze the banana, mango, pineapple and spinach together in a bag, and blend with the kefir in the morning.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a smoothie bowl thick?
Use mostly frozen fruit, very little liquid and a tamper or short pulses. Frozen banana or mango makes it especially thick.
Can you taste the spinach in a green smoothie?
Not really. Mango, pineapple and banana cover its mild taste, and a small handful mostly changes the colour.
Is this smoothie bowl vegan?
It's vegetarian because of the kefir. Use a plant-based kefir or soy yogurt to make it vegan.
Can I make it the night before?
It's best blended fresh. Pre-pack the frozen ingredients so it takes a few minutes in the morning.
